Can you name Joseph’s 11 brothers? Singing makes it easy!

We studied the children of Jacob/ Israel a while back in our journey through Genesis.

However, my four-year-olds are still singing this song, so I thought it was worthy of sharing… even late. ūüėČ

You Reap What You Sow… Jacob’s Tricks

“Do not be deceived: ¬†God is not mocked. for whatever one sows, that will he also reap.” ¬†Galatians 6:7

On this farm, we love the agricultural images and comparisons found throughout the Bible. ūüôā This is one of those life lessons that we keep reminding our children. ¬†You reap what you sow. ¬†Daddy doesn’t plant cotton seeds and expect a crop of beans! ¬†Our actions have consequences. ¬†Wise choices have good consequences, and foolish choices have bad consequences. ¬†We can expect blessings for obedience and curses for disobedience.

During our journey through Genesis, we’ve studied the life of Jacob. ¬†The big kids helped me teach the little ones about how Jacob tricked his brother trading a plate of stew for the birthright, and we saw how he tricked his father for the¬†blessing…

photoHere are Esau and Jacob.  Esau is wearing red felt for his red, hairy skin.  Jacob is wearing a tan foam sheet for his smooth skin.  Esau has a tree and slingshot for he likes going outdoors and hunting while Jacob wears a tent and has a cooking pot to remind us that he prefers to dwell at home.

Jacob wants an important present! ¬†It is marked with a “B” for birthright. ¬†It has a lamb on it and the word “Leader” to help us remember that the son who received the birthright became the family’s leader and got much of the animals and wealth. ¬†Jacob tricked Esau into giving him the birthright for the plate of stew.

photoRebekah is helping Jacob deceive his father Isaac by putting goatskins on his arms, that he might feel like Esau and receive his father’s blessing.

……….

I’ve always thought it interesting that Jacob tricked Isaac as Isaac lost his sight. ¬†Jacob deceived him regarding the traditions and customs of the firstborn. ¬†Then, after working for seven years for Laban in hopes of marrying Rachael, Jacob is in turn tricked. He is deceived when he is unable to see… the veil of Leah and the evening hide the bride from his eyes. ¬†All this Laban did in order to uphold the customs regarding the birth order of his daughters. ¬†Hmmm… you reap what you sow.

……….

We also discussed the way that Jacob was later deceived again by his sons.  They told him that his precious Joseph was killed when in reality, they had sold their own brother into slavery.

Here are some simple drawings that Leven and Catherine did to help us remember the tricks Jacob played and the tricks played on him…

Of course we know that Jacob was loved and blessed by God and one of the great patriarchs. ¬†These events in his life were pieces of a bigger picture. ¬†These events in his great story were all part of God’s plan.

We also remember “let us not grow weary in doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.” ¬†Galatians 6:9 ¬†“A harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.” ¬†James 3:18
